Magenta Studio built a stainless steel igloo at the Tel Aviv Craft and Design Biennale

To commemorate the city’s first handicrafts and design biennale, product design studio Magenta Studio brought the igloo into the warm climate of Tel Aviv. The device is hand-made with stainless steel plates and adopts traditional construction methods, reflecting the surrounding environment. The work proposes the concept of shelter and refuge, aiming to question our relationship with nature and the important role it plays.
An igloo is a house, a temporary shelter, an original dwelling made of snow, a prototype structure, which will dissolve in a puddle when it is no longer used. The Igloo at Magenta Studio is a structure that aims to establish a connection between traditional society, ancient construction methods, and new materials and technologies.
It is carefully crafted by hand, but its simple form is the result of complex mathematical calculations. Sealed like a burial structure, it consists of reflective stainless steel plates that reflect, repeat and distort its surroundings. It echoes the disappearing traditions and melting glaciers, dazzling the audience, and at the same time, it also raises questions about the role of mankind in the world and its relationship with nature.
