Bamboo workshop combines humanistic traditions and bamboo art.

The bamboo workshop, designed by Zaixing Architects, is located in the terraced fields of Yuepan, deep in Anshi Village, Yibin City, Sichuan Province. It is an ordinary village located on Nianpan Mountain. The village is a typical settlement in southern Sichuan.
The triangular site boundary, formed by the surrounding natural texture and country road, naturally forms the outline of the building. Combined with the urban revitalization planning of the countryside in Anshi Village, Zhufang is conceived as a studio specialized in researching the craft of bamboo weaving.
In traditional Chinese villages, family workshops often use the “shop front and factory back” model, combining sales and production. Similarly, bamboo workshops also include research, production, demonstration, sales and other functions. They run under a sloping roof with rounded triangles, forming a workshop of experience for visitors and a place of activity for the villagers.
On a path among terraced fields, a light roof suddenly appears in front of you, supported by a circle of slender columns. In contrast to the “four drinking waters in one” on the roof of most courtyards, in the center of the bamboo workshop, a two-tiered round glass “beacon” protrudes from the roof, forming a receiving space that can view the surrounding area. . At the same time, without affecting the underlying spatial organization.
The round triangular roof bulges slightly towards the central “beacon”, exposing the woven T-shaped steel mesh under the roof. The T-pieces, made from 300 mm and 100 mm high steel plates, “weave” with each other, just like the local craft of bamboo weaving, forming a staggered structural skeleton of the roof. Compared to most rural buildings, Bamboo Art Workshop attempts to challenge the more complex rural building methods with some non-traditional methods while limiting the cost of construction.
The old houses at the original site were also built under the eaves. The beams, columns, and truss structures of the old house are preserved, and the original enclosed walls are replaced with clear glass and glass tiles to form a bamboo display area. The second half is made of red sandstone and is used as a research space.
